I'm a 24-year-old Minnesota native who graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Journalism BA. I then spent a year working for peanuts at an education non-profit in DC as an Americorps*VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America). I worked closely with several low-income public schools, and that experience inspired me to want to teach in one. I created this blog to chronicle my first year as a New York City Public School teacher and as a Teach for America corps member.

I agree. Their praise is worth much more than any paycheque. I live for the moments that they get excited about English.
I have been googling TFA - a moment when I sit in my LA classroom miserable...yes, despite how horrible teaching last year was - taking over a middle school year-round classroom and subbing a lot - I do get kids who seem to appreciate me, who say "I wanted to thank you for opening my eyes," or come to visit me after getting moved to a foster home. It has been pretty miserable though, I don't recommend TFA to anyone. I don't connect to the corps members either - it is horrible. Having a biologist is better than having subs, but I should have stayed in research.
