I'm a 24-year-old Minnesota native who graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Journalism BA. I then spent a year working for peanuts at an education non-profit in DC as an Americorps*VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America). I worked closely with several low-income public schools, and that experience inspired me to want to teach in one. I created this blog to chronicle my first year as a New York City Public School teacher and as a Teach for America corps member.
I'm still in search of middle school level 'boy books.' In case my request for comments and suggestions got lost in my last post, I wanted to make a seperate one to make sure everyone saw it. Please comment or email me!
hey jenny, i have a series of books that all my students boys and girls love. they are middle school level and i think are called hte Bluford Series. THey are very applicable to the lives of my students and probably to the ones you work with as well. They are very high interest and the kids actually enjoy reading them.
Thanks Sinead! That's a really good point. ...to consider the audience. I'm not sure how much my future students would enjoy the White Boy and His Dog genre (Sounder, Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, etc). :) I mean, sure, I loved them, but I also grew up in Minnesota and collected rocks for fun, so my tastes obviously can't be trusted. Thanks for the suggestion!
